Drexel Edges Rutgers Field Hockey in Overtime, 1-0
Sep 10 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Playing its second game in a 24-hour span, the Rutgers field hockey team (3-3) lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Drexel on Friday evening at the Rutgers Stadium Complex.
The Dragons (3-1) scored the games only goal with 2:50 remaining in the first overtime, as Rachel Zeldin poked a shot past RU goalkeeper Kristin Van Rooij (Den Bosch, The Netherlands). Despite having several scoring chances in the overtime, RU couldn’t solve Drexel goalkeeper Katie Dougherty, who made six saves. Her counterpart, Van Rooij, was equal to the task however, stopping five shots.
The Scarlet Knights had several scoring opportunities in the second half, including a pair of shots on goal from Kara Spector (Easton, MD) and a shot by Courtney Hudson (Churchville, PA) that nearly found the back of the cage. Overall, RU outshot Drexel 15-14.
Rutgers’ defensive effort was led by senior captain Tiffany Klebez (Milford, PA), junior Heather Graver (Vincentown, NJ), freshman Catherine Badolato (Berlin, NJ) and sophomore Kirsten Graham (Cinnaminson, NJ). On offense, Hudson and Mary Szymonowicz (Piscataway, NJ) each had four shots.
“We had our chances, but I take my hat off to Drexel,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “We knew they’d be a scrappy team. I think the best thing we can do is learn from the experience and get ready to start the BIG EAST season next week.”
The Scarlet Knights open the BIG EAST portion of their schedule next Friday, Sept. 17, when they host the Syracuse Orange at 7:30 p.m. Last year in Syracuse, Rutgers earned a 1-0 victory.
