Both teams took a while of feeling each other out, without a shot attempted for the first 14 minutes. Rutgers pushed forward late in the first for a rush with player advantages, but the shot was turned aside by IU.
Rutgers earned the game's first corner at the 9:34 mark of the second quarter, doing so after having zero corners in the entire game during last weekend's victory over IU. A great setup for RU led to a quality chance, but the shot went just wide. Indiana's first shot attempt came 23 minutes into the contest and went wide. Rutgers had a late full field run but were unable turn the breakout into a shot.
Early in the second quarter, Indiana put heavy pressure on the RU goal. RU's defense initially made a great play to clear the line, then IU earned two corners, hitting the post on their second one. The Hoosiers kept the ball in the circle, Emily Nicholls kicked one aside, but it went back to an IU forward who sent it into the net.
RU countered trying to equalize and earned a series of corners. On the third corner, the Scarlet Knights capitalized. The corner was inserted to Anna Cogdell, who sent a pass across to set up Talia Schenck. Then, Schenck launched a hard low shot, tucking it into the far corner of the net for the game-tying goal.
However, Indiana counted quickly. Just under two minutes later, the Hoosiers scored. After a quick circle entry, IU had a 3-on-2 advantage, passing around the charging goalkeeper and finished for the 2-1 lead.
RU pulled its goalkeeper with four minutes to play. An Indiana green card gave RU a two-player advantage in the final minute. With 13.7 seconds showing on the clock, RU earned a corner, then a second corner with 8.7 seconds showing, but the Scarlet Knights pushed but were unable to equalize.
