RU Field Hockey Falls to Virginia Commonwealth, 5-1

RICHMOND, VA – Virginia Commonwealth’s Carlot Verloop scored three goals as the Rams built a 4-1 halftime lead and handed the Rutgers field hockey team (2-1) its first loss of the season, 5-1, on Friday, Sept. 3, in Richmond, VA.
Medeia Mustafaa scored nearly seven minutes into regulation as VCU (2-1) took an early 1-0 lead. The Rams then netted back-to-back goals from Verloop less then two minutes apart to go ahead 3-0 with 27:19 remaining in the first half.
RU’s Jaime Fraser (Voorhees, NJ) netted her first score of the season off a pass from Bobbi Jo Adams (Port Norris, NJ) with 15:02 to play before halftime, but VCU added a goal from Daphne Bravenboer on a penalty corner to take its 4-1 lead at intermission.
Kristin Van Rooij (Ben Bosch, The Netherlands), the reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, made seven saves in goal. Virginia Commonwealth outshot Rutgers 18-14 and the Scarlet Knights held a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 5, when it travels to Williamsburg, VA, to face William and Mary. Gametime is set for 1:00 p.m.
