Men's Lacrosse Announces 2006 Schedule

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Games against seven teams that qualified for the 2005 NCAA Tournament, including home contests with Syracuse, Delaware, Fairfield and Georgetown, highlight the 2006 Rutgers men's lacrosse schedule, head coach Jim Stagnitta announced today.
Once again playing one of the most competitive schedules in the nation, Rutgers faces a 14-game slate in 2006, and will prepare for the regular season by taking on defending NCAA champion Johns Hopkins in a preseason scrimmage on Feb. 11. A week later, Penn and Siena come to Piscataway for scrimmages.
The regular season officially opens with a four-game homstand, beginning with Butler, a member of the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL), on Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. Delaware, which finished 11-6 last year and lost to Navy in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, comes to Piscataway on March 4, followed on March 10 by ECAC newcomer Fairfield, which won the GWLL last season in its final year as a league member. RU wraps up the homestand on Tuesday, March 14, against Manhattan at 3:00 p.m.
The Scarlet Knights take to the road for the first time when they head to West Point, NY, to face Army on March 18, as Rutgers will be seeking its first win over the Black Knights since 1998. With a week off, Rutgers welcomes Hobart to Piscataway for the first time in program history on March 25, and then travels to Stony Brook for a mid-week game on March 28.
The ECAC schedule kicks into high gear in April, as the Scarlet Knights host St. John's (April 5) and then travel to Baltimore, MD, to tackle Loyola (April 8). Rutgers returns home on April 15 for its annual showdown with Syracuse. In 2004, RU handed the eventual national champion Orange one of its two losses, topping Syracuse 14-10 at Yurcak Field.
On April 22, Rutgers faces a critical stretch in which it wraps up the regular season with four games in 14 days, starting with the annual Friendship Cup game against Penn State in State College. It continues with a mid-week contest against rival Princeton on April 25, the latest in the regular season that the two teams have met since 1979. Georgetown comes to Yurcak Field on April 29 for the final home contest of the season, and the Scarlet Knights travel to Amherst, MA, to tangle with defending ECAC champion Massachusetts on May 6.
