No. 13 Men's Lacrosse Undone at Michigan
Apr 05 | Men's Lacrosse
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 13 Rutgers men's lacrosse played on a dreary day on Easter Sunday on the road, falling 13-10 at Michigan. The Scarlet Knights fell to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play with the result, while Michigan improved to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play.
Rutgers led 6-3 in the second quarter, but Michigan answered with a 6-1 run including a 4-0 margin in the third quarter. RU tied the game at 9-9 in the fourth quarter, then Michigan scored three quick goals to retake the advantage and seal their victory.
Kasey Mongillo had a season-high three goals, his first hat trick since February of last season. Colin Kelly had three goals for RU in his first start on attack of the season, a season-high for him as well. Cardin Stoller made 14 saves. Michigan won 17-of-26 faceoffs to establish possession advantage in the game.
Rutgers got off to a great start offensively. Kasey Mongillo, the hero at the end of regulation last week in the win over No. 11 Johns Hopkins, boosted the offense early with two goals in first three minutes of the game, forcing an early timeout by the home team. RU continued its offensive pressure with the first five shots of the game and took a 3-0 lead on a nice catch and finish from Greyson Vorgang off the feed from JJ Aiello.
After Michigan's first goal of the game, Brady Kurdyla scored an unassisted tally to make it 4-1. Kurdyla scored just his second goal of the year by carrying around the goal crease and beating his defender to score the marker. RU's ride forced Michigan into struggles in their clear early, with six turnovers and three failed clears in the first quarter, leading 4-2 after one frame.
After scoring four times in the first seven minutes, RU went 15 minutes without a goal, allowing UM to get back within one, but Colin Zeller answered with his strength, working his way though the defense to finish in front for a 5-3 lead. Colin Kelly then pushed the lead to 6-3, backing his man down and putting in a strong shot for the three-goal lead.
Michigan got back within one at 6-5, but RU scored in the final minute for a two-goal lead at halftime. Colin Kurdyla had a great individual effort in a short clock situation to muscle in and finish for a 7-5 halftime lead.
Michigan scored three goals in the 1:20 of the second half after two faceoff wins to take an 8-7 lead, their first lead of the day. Michigan made it a 6-1 run after RU led 6-3 as they extended their lead to 9-7 with four goals in the first four minutes of the second half. Rutgers was unable to score in the third quarter, with Michigan taking a two-goal lead into the fourth.
RU halted the run with a goal early in the fourth quarter, with a great setup on the play from Colin Kurdyla, who found Colin Kelly for the finish, making it a one-goal game once again. The play was sparked by a great stop on the defensive end by goalkeeper Cardin Stoller, making a diving save on Michigan's goalkeeper as he tried to score against RU's 10-man ride, with Stoller denying it for his 13th save of the day. Kasey Mongillo then tied it with a hat trick goal to even the score at 9-9.
Michigan answered back with three quick goals. The Wolverines had a laser shot on their next offensive possession, then finished off a transition goal and added a third tally for a three-goal lead at 12-9.
Colin Kelly added a goal for RU with four minutes to play, bouncing one home. However, RU wasn't able to cut further into the Michigan advantage, and the Wolverines clinched their home victory on Senior Day.
