Brian Brecht Announces Promotion on Coaching Staff
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men's lacrosse head coach Brian Brecht announced the promotion of Scott Bieda to associate head coach.
Bieda is entering his second season on the Scarlet Knight coaching staff as the team's offensive coordinator. In Bieda's first season on the RU staff in 2026, the Scarlet Knights won eight games, including a victory over No. 11 Johns Hopkins. Bieda mentored attackman Colin Kurdyla, who was named a Second Team All-Big Ten selection and an All-American after leading the league in points and assists per game. RU's scoring output increased by 1.6 goals per game from the year prior.

Bieda excelled on the playing field as a Scarlet Knight. An attackman, he finished his career sixth all-time in RU history in both assists (103) and points (193), also scoring 90 goals. A two-time team captain, Bieda was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2016, the lone RU player to ever receive that accolade, after he totaled 28 goals and 38 assists for 66 points, leading the Big Ten in assists and points.
Bieda was a three-time all-conference selection (twice named First Team All-Big Ten) and two-time Big Ten All-Tournament team selection. In 2016, he was a Third Team All-American, MVP of the North/South All-Star Game and Tewaaraton Award Semifinalist. Bieda played in 61 games at RU, starting 56 of them, and had 91 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Across Rutgers' awards, Bieda won the Coursen Award and the William Miller Trophy in 2016, Knight Cup in 2015, and was a three-time winner of the Alfred Sasser Trophy for most assists on the squad.
A native of Bridgewater, N.J., Bieda grew up just under 10 minutes from campus. He played high school lacrosse at Bridgewater – Raritan High School under Scarlet Knight alumn Chuck Apel, setting the school's point record as a senior with 108 points on 60 goals and 49 assists. He set the school's record with 204 points in his career and was a two-time All-State player and US Lacrosse All-American.
Prior to joining Rutgers' coaching staff, Bieda spent nine seasons as a Division I coach at Michigan and Lafayette. Bieda spent three seasons previously in the Big Ten with Michigan. He boosted their offenses to some of the program's top marks in history, with the team setting a program record in goals, assists and points in 2023, placing second in points the following year, and twice winning the Big Ten Tournament.
Bieda's collegiate career started in the Patriot League, with six seasons at Lafayette. He spent the final four seasons there as the offensive coordinator.
