Apr 11 | Men's Lacrosse
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 19 Rutgers men's lacrosse played on the road Saturday evening at No. 9 Maryland. Facing the defending national runner-up and the preseason No. 1 ranked team with a shorthanded roster, RU fell by a 12-2 score. A big second quarter run for Maryland put them in front for good, as Maryland turned an early 1-0 RU lead into an 8-1 halftime advantage for the Terps as the hosts took control from there.
Attackman Greyson Vorgang had his seventh multi-goal game of the year for RU. Cardin Stoller had his eighth double-digit save game of the year with 13 stops as he approaches 500 career saves.
Duke Richman got his first start of the season on midfield. Rutgers has now used nine different starting lineups through 13 games, including nine different starting midfielders.
Maryland faceoff Specialist Henry Dodge, who entered the season fourth nationally in faceoff winning percentage, was 80% at the X, as Maryland won 12-of-19 overall and 10 of the first 11 faceoffs to establish the possession advantage. That led to Maryland taking 14 more shots than RU.
Rutgers got on the scoreboard first. Greyson Vorgang had the game's first goal, catching a feed from Kasey Mongillo, turning and firing to score. That gave RU a 1-0 lead in the early going on the team's first shot of the day.
Maryland answered back with a man-up goal shortly after. Then at the 5:29 mark, Maryland got a second goal to take a 2-1 lead heading into the game's first media timeout. The first quarter would finish with that scoreline, with RU holding strong to keep it a one-goal game. Cardin Stoller made five saves in the first quarter to keep RU in it despite losing the first four faceoffs with an 11-4 MD advantage in shots in the opening 15 minutes of play.
Maryland scored its third goal in transition, with a pole goal from LSM AJ Larkin, racing the length of the field to score after causing a turnover three minutes into the second quarter. Then RU was penalized for offsides, and Eric Spanos scored a goal from in front of the cage for a 4-1 lead. Another faceoff win, Maryland's eighth straight to open the game, led to a goal and a 5-1 lead for the Terps.
The Terps continued to roll, using a 6-0 edge in the second quarter for an 8-1 halftime lead. The home team won 10 of the first 11 faceoffs for a 24-12 shot advantage.
After halftime, Maryland scored first, making it a 9-0 run. Vorgang answered as he caught a pass from Brady Kurdyla coming around the cage and scored into the top corner. The Terps continued to expand their lead, and put away the visitors.
Rutgers will finish the season at home on Friday, April 17, hosting Penn State at 8 p.m. That game is a Big Ten Network broadcast and RU will celebrate an 18-member senior class and also honor program legends during the annual Alumni Appreciation Day. Following the last weekend of play, the Big Ten Tournament bracket will be unveiled. RU will play a Quarterfinal game on the weekend of April 25th. Rutgers will then be the hosts for the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals (Thursday, April 30) and Finals (Saturday, May 2) at SHI Stadium.
