Field Hockey Falls to No. 15 UConn 4-1
Oct 15 | Field Hockey
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 27th minute of the first half when Lizzy Peijs was able to knock home a loose ball in front of the Rutgers cage. The Scarlet Knights held the Connecticut offense at bay for most of the first half, and despite the Peijs goal, RU was upbeat heading into the second half with just a one-goal deficit to overcome.
At 47:11 in the second half, standout freshman midfielder Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ) tied the game at one when she was able to deflect a pass from senior back Kara Spector (Easton, MD) past Huskie goalie Melissa Bostwick. The goal was Lewis' fifth of the season and the assists, coming from Spector and sophomore midfielder Corrine Bach (Moorsetown, NJ), were their first and eighth, respectively.
After tying the score, the Scarlet Knights went on to allow three straight Huskie goals. Hoffmann netted her first of the contest at 51:15 of the second half and her second just 46 seconds later at 52:01. Connecticut tallied their fourth and final goal of the afternoon when Puddle found Kati Cavanagh in front of the RU cage.
Despite a brilliant effort by RU sophomore goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA), who tallied seven saves on 17 Connecticut shots, the Scarlet Knights were unable to keep up with the Huskie surge in the second half.
Scarlet Knight head coach Liz Tchou credited Wentko for playing such a tremendous game. '[Wentko] really owned the cage today,' Tchou said. '[Wentko's] been practicing really well lately and it was clear she was very sharp.'
Wentko is among the BIG EAST leaders in total saves, as she has registered 83 saves over 14 of the teams' 15 total contests.
The loss drops the Scarlet Knights to 6-9 on the season and leaves them 0-4 in the BIG EAST with one conference game to go. The No. 15 Huskies improved to 11-4 with the victory over RU and go to 2-1 in the BIG EAST with the conference tournament rapidly approaching.
The Scarlet Knights will wrap up their BIG EAST slate on Friday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Louisville to take on the No. 13 Cardinals at 3:00 p.m. Louisville is currently tied for first place in the BIG EAST with the Huskies, No. 16 Villanova and Syracuse, all with records of 2-1.
