Field Hockey Ends BIG EAST Slate on Losing Note

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Rutgers University field hockey team closed out their BIG EAST schedule on Friday afternoon with a loss to the Louisville Cardinals, 8-1, in Louisville, KY.
Behind three goals by Janelle Avila and two assists from Lisa Wasser, the Cardinals were able to knock off the Scarlet Knights.
Rachel Overton opened the scoring for the Cardinals in the second minute of the game when she scored on a penalty stroke. Casey Diener followed with a goal of her own, and after Jessica Javelet scored the first of her two goals on the day, the Cardinals had a commanding 3-0 lead.
Avila connected on her first score in the 13th minute of action and Javelet added her second 10 minutes later. The Scarlet Knights headed into the break with a five-goal deficit to overcome.
The Scarlet Knights notched their only goal of the game in the 39th minute. After Jen Payne gave Louisville a 6-0 lead, the Scarlet Knights were awarded a penalty corner. Sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) pushed out to sophomore midfielder Corinne Bach (Moorestown, NJ). Bach shuffled off to senior back Kara Spector (Easton, MD), who was able to find the back of the cage for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. With their assists, Mattina and Bach each have nine assists on the season.
Avila would score twice more, once in the 62nd minute and again in the 66th minute, to give the Cardinals a seven-goal lead and the eventual victory.
With the loss, Rutgers dropped to 6-10 on the season and ended its BIG EAST season with a record of 0-5. The win improved the Cardinals to 11-6 and 3-2 in the BIG EAST.
The Scarlet Knights will stay in Louisville and square off against Radford in a neutral site affair at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
