RU Field Hockey Falls to American, 4-2
Oct 09 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Camila Infante scored the eventual game-winning goal on a penalty stroke in the second half to lead the Eagles of American past the Rutgers University field hockey team 4-2 on Sunday, Oct. 9, at the RU Stadium Complex.
Rutgers freshman forward Carrie Grainger (Island Heights, NJ) opened the scoring for the Scarlet Knights early in the first half. In the ninth minute, a Rutgers shot deflected off of American goalie Allison Fayfich, and Grainger found the back of the net for her third goal of the season, giving RU the early 1-0 advantage. However, American fought back with four unanswered goals.
American tied the game at 1-1 in the 15th minute when Maureen Daniel found Heidi Hershberger in front of the RU cage. In the 29th minute, Maggie Hall scored an unassisted goal off of a penalty corner to give the Eagles a one-goal lead, one they would not surrender. Infante followed Hall’s goal by scoring one of her own off of a penalty corner, and Irene Schickhardt registered the fourth and final American goal after she was set up by Infante.
Rutgers continued to fight, and in the 67th minute, freshman midfielder Amy Lewis (Hainesport, NJ) found sophomore forward Catherine Badolato (Berlin, NJ) in front of the net. Badolato beat Fayfich to bring RU to within two goals of the Eagles, 4-2, but that was as close as the Scarlet Knights would get. The goal was Badolato’s fourth of the season, giving her eight points on the year on 11 shot attempts.
Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou was pleased with the way her team played, explaining that the Scarlet Knights played their two best halves of hockey the entire season against the Eagles. “We are very proud,” said Tchou. “The team followed the game plan and played very tough defense. We had opportunities in both halves, we just didn’t get a few bounces. You saw very high level hockey today, and it was a very hard-fought game.”
The loss dropped the Scarlet Knights to 6-8 on the season, and they are 0-3 in BIG EAST action. With the victory, the Eagles remained undefeated at 11-0.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. when they play host to BIG EAST rival Connecticut at the RU Stadium Complex.
