Douby's 27 Keys Rutgers' Win Over St. Thomas Aquinas

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Quincy Douby, the second-leading scorer in the BIG EAST this season, poured in 27 points on seven-of-13 shooting as Rutgers registered a season-high point total in its 94-56 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Monday night at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Thirteen different players scored for Rutgers, led by Douby, who scored 20 or more points for the fifth straight game. In the process, he moved past Hall of Famer Gene Armstead into 31st place on RU's all-time career scoring list (1,052 points). Douby netted five of the game's first nine points, but St. Thomas Aquinas stayed within 12 points at intermission (36-24), despite shooting just 29.6 percent from the floor.
Rutgers put the game out of reach with a 17-4 run in the first six minutes of the second half, keyed by 11 points from Douby. The lead would balloon to as many as 42 points late in the second half as RU shot a blistering 58.8 percent after intermission. Douby had plenty of offensive help on the evening, led by a career-high 13 points from freshman Jaron Griffin and 10 points in 11 minutes from sophomore forward Ollie Bailey.
The Scarlet Knights were able to give many of their starters extended rest in the second half, as Douby scored his 27 points in a season-low 24 minutes of action. Junior guard Shayle Keating made the most of his 19 minutes of action, netting a career-high six points while dishing out a career-high five assists. Rutgers out-rebounded the Spartans 50-29 and had assists on 25 of its 32 made baskets. Junior center Byron Joynes notched the seventh double-figure rebounding game of his career, pulling down 10 boards in 19 minutes, while adding six points.
In holding St. Thomas Aquinas to a season-low 30.4 percent shooting, Rutgers is now limiting its opponents to just 36.9 percent from the floor on the season.
Rutgers returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 15, when it continues its seven-game homestand by welcoming Maine to the RAC for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
POSTGAME NOTES
DOUBY DOES IT AGAIN
With 27 points scored in just 24 minutes of action against St. Thomas Aquinas, junior guard Quincy Douby moved past Rutgers Hall of Famer Gene Armstead for sole possession of 31st place on the all-time scoring list with 1,052 career points. It is the fifth straight game that Douby has topped the 20-point mark and 15th straight game, dating back to last season that he has scored in double figures.
DOUBY CLIMBS THE CHARTS
Junior guard Quincy Douby continues to ascend the Rutgers all-time records, as he moved into seventh place in three point field goals made with 160. Douby also claimed fifth place in three point field goals attempted with 423.
JOYNES REBOUNDS
Junior forward Byron Joynes pulled down 10 rebounds in the Scarlet Knights' 94-56 win against St. Thomas Aquinas. It marks the third time this season (10 vs. Kent State, 10 vs. UMES) and 10th in his career that Joynes has put together a double-digit rebounding performance.
RUTGERS DEFENSE
After limiting the Spartans to 29.6% shooting in the first half, the Scarlet Knights have held their opponents to less than 30% shooting from the field in a half in six of their first nine games.
It also marks the seventh time this season that Rutgers has held an opponent under .400 shooting from the field for the game. The only teams that have shot above .400 from the field against the Scarlet Knights are Illinois (.510) and Saint Mary's (.444). For the season, opposing teams are shooting just .369 vs. Rutgers.

The 94 points Rutgers scored against St. Thomas Aquinas on Dec. 12 was the most since the Scarlet Knights defeated Northern Colorado 102-52 on Feb. 17, 2004. RU topped its previous season-high point total of 92 points against Maryland Eastern Shore.
