Douby, Bailey, Webb Power Rutgers Past Maine, 91-56

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Paced by the BIG EAST leading scorer Quincy Douby, who had 22 points, Rutgers enjoyed its third strong offensive output in the last four games, defeating Maine, 91-56, on Thursday night at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
In its last three home games – vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore, St. Thomas Aquinas and Maine – the Scarlet Knights averaged 92.6 points while yielding just 54.0. Rutgers shot 53 percent from the field vs. Maine, just three days after hitting 59 percent of its shots against St. Thomas Aquinas.
Douby, a 6-3 junior guard averaging a conference-best 22.3 points per game entering the contest, has now scored 20 or more points in six of his last seven games. He poured in 19 of his game-high 22 points in the first half. Rutgers took control of the game early in the opening stanza when the Scarlet Knights embarked on a 20-5 spurt over a 4:47 span that turned a 14-11 deficit into a commanding 31-19 lead. The run was keyed by 12 points from Douby, who nailed four three-pointers. He finished the night 8-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Leading by eight with 5:50 to play before intermission, Rutgers finished the first half strong, scoring 18 of the next 24 points to take a comfortable 52-32 lead at the half. Rutgers shot 59 percent in the first half en route to posting season-highs in field goals made (35) and assists (26). Thirteen different players scored for Rutgers.
Sophomore forward Ollie Bailey gained a starting assignment and responded with a season-high 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior swingman Marquis Webb also scored 11 points, hitting three three-point field goals while registering three steals. Webb turned in his customary stellar defensive effort, holding Maine’s leading scorer, Ernest Turner without a field goal attempt in the first half. Turner, who came in with a team-high 17.6 scoring average, finished the night with 11 points
Freshman point guard Anthony Farmer had another strong floor game, handing out a career-high eight assists, while committing just two turnovers in 25 minutes. Freshman Jaron Griffin had his second-straight double figure game, netting 10 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Junior forward Adrian Hill scored a season-high eight points while playing tremendous post defense in 14 active minutes. Rutgers was without the services of junior center Byron Joynes (shoulder).
For the Black Bears, Phil Tchekanie Bofia led the way with 15 points, while Turner and Jon Sheets added 11 apiece. The Black Bears shot just seven-of-27 from the floor in the second half (.259).
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 17, when it hosts South Carolina State at the RAC. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
POSTGAME NOTES
SCARLET KNIGHTS' 8-2 START IS THE BEST SINCE….
With Rutgers' 91-56 victory over Maine on Thursday, the Scarlet Knights are now 8-2 on the season. It matches the best start in the five-year Gary Waters era. In Waters' first season, Rutgers opened the 2001-02 season 8-2 en route to an 18-13 record and appearance in the postseason National Invitation Tournament.
DOUBY CONTINUES SCORING SPREE
Junior guard Quincy Douby continued his scoring spree on Thursday against Maine. The 6-3 guard, who came into the game as the BIG EAST's leading scorer at 22.3 points per game, scored 22 points against the Black Bears, including 19 in the first half. Douby's 19-point first half was the third-highest point total in a half this season for him. He scored 23 in the second half in RU's victory over St. Mary's (CA) on Dec. 3 and 21 in the second half against Temple on Nov. 30. He moved up to 30th on the all-time scoring list, passing Damon Santiago (91-93, 94-96). Douby now has 1,074 career points. He has topped the 20-point mark in six of his last seven games and has scored in double figures in 16-straight games dating back to last season.
RUTGERS HOT FROM THE FIELD
The Scarlet Knights shot 53.0 percent (35-of-66) from the field against Maine, marking the second-straight game and fourth time overall this season that they have eclipsed the 50-percent mark from the field in a game. The Scarlet Knights' 59.4 percent (19-of-32) first-half performance was the second-highest total in a half this season since shooting 76.9 percent (10-of-13) in the first half against Delaware State on Nov. 22.
FARMER POSTS CAREER HIGH ASSIST TOTAL
Freshman guard Anthony Farmer established a new career high in assists on Thursday against Maine. His eight assists against the Black Bears top his previous best of six in his first collegiate game in RU's season opener against Austin Peay on Nov. 20. Farmer has started all 10 games at point guard for the Scarlet Knights this season.
BAILEY, GRIFFIN POST BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE-DIGIT OUTINGS
Sophomore forward Ollie Bailey and freshman forward Jaron Griffin finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively against Maine, marking the second consecutive game each has scored in double figures. Bailey finished with 10 points, while Griffin added 13 in RU's previous contest against St. Thomas Aquinas. Griffin also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds against the Black Bears, besting his previous high of five in his first collegiate game against Austin Peay on Nov. 20.
SCARLET KNIGHTS REGISTER HIGHEST ASSIST TOTAL IN MORE THAN EIGHT YEARS
RU's 26 assists against Maine is a season high for the Scarlet Knights. The total is the most since Dec. 3, 1998, when the Scarlet Knights also recorded 26 assists in an 84-49 victory over Columbia.
RED-HOT OFFENSE TOPS 90-POINT MARK AGAIN
The 91-56 victory over Maine on Thursday, marked the third-consecutive home game that the Scarlet Knights have eclipsed the 90-point mark. In its last three home games, RU is averaging 92.3 points per game, while limiting its opponent to 56.0 points per contest.
RUTGERS AT THE RAC
Rutgers is a perfect 6-0 at the RAC this season. The Scarlet Knights own a 54-18 record (75 percent) at the RAC under head coach Gary Waters.
