Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Falls to Connecticut, 11-5

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-5 decision to Connecticut in BIG EAST women's lacrosse action Sunday at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights fall to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST with the loss, while the Huskies improve to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
Connecticut scored the first four goals of the game to take the 4-0 lead midway through the first half. UConn's Jacqui Hamilton had a pair of scores, while Tracy Mullaney and Kristen Link chipped in a goal each for the Huskies.
The Scarlet Knights cut the lead in half with a pair of scores from freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ), making it 4-2 with 5:49 to play in the opening half. Shomo took a feed from junior Emily Widrick (Carthage, NY) to open the RU scoring, then connected on a free-position shot for her 14th and 15th goals of the season.
The Huskies closed the half with a pair of goals to open the lead back up to four goals (6-2) at the break.
Sophomore Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) scored an unassisted goal in the first minute of the second half to make it 6-3.
UConn made it 8-3 with a free-position goal by Dana Stewart at the 27:52 mark and a score from Mullaney with 26:09 remaining in the contest.
The Scarlet Knights chipped into UConn's lead with a pair of scores to make it 8-5 with 17:39 to play. Batiuk scored her second goal of the game with 25:21 remaining then fed fellow sophomore Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) for Marchitello's eighth goal of the season.
Connecticut closed the game with the final three goals of the contest as Mullaney, Stewart and Tammy Michel scored for UConn, giving the Huskies the 11-5 victory.
Senior Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made 15 saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights, while her counterpart, Jennifer Wong made 14 stops for the Huskies.
Batiuk has scored at least one goal in all 11 games this season with multiple scores in eight contests. She leads the team in scoring with 33 goals and nine assists. With Sunday's two goals, Batiuk eclipsed her season total of 32 goals in 15 games as a freshman last season.
Rutgers will be idle for more than week before traveling to Syracuse, NY, to face the Orange on Friday, April 22 at 4 p.m.
