Rutgers Earns 2-0 Win against FDU
Aug 28 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, NJ) scored twice to lead the Rutgers women’s soccer team (2-0) to a 2-0 victory against visiting Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) Aug. 28 at Yurcak Field.
Edmonds gave the Scarlet Knights an early lead, scoring her first goal in the seventh minute. The freshman beat her defender on the left side, cut through the box and beat the keeper. The ball ricocheted off a FDU defender as it found the back of the net, giving Rutgers the early 1-0 edge.
As time was winding down in the first half, freshman Jessica Bendzlowicz (Holland, PA) intercepted the ball in the midfield and made a perfect pass to find Edmonds in the middle of box. Edmonds settled the ball and blasted it past FDU keeper Kyla Clark, pushing the Scarlet Knights ahead 2-0 with 9.9 seconds on the clock.
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made one save for her second consecutive shutout (2-0).
“I thought that the first half was very good,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “We faced an opponent tonight who we knew would give us more problems in the attack than the previous two teams we have played, and we really limited their chances and forced them into a situation where they only could play it long.
“Edmond’s second goal was a tremendous strike. To have it happen right at the end had to be difficult for FDU to watch, and gave us the momentum going into the locker room. We had opportunities to get the third goal. I really respect Peter (Gaglioti) and the job he has done at FDU, and they have really come on the last few years. Our inability to get the third goal really kept them in the match, and if one manages to sneak in, they’re right back in it.
“I thought our backs played better in the second half and really controlled their area of the field. We made a commitment to deny the long-ball service coming into tonight’s match, and I though we did a better job of that than we did against Temple (Friday night).”
Rutgers will finish its three-match opening homestand Sunday, Sept. 4, hosting Saint Joseph’s at 7:00 p.m.
