Field Hockey Drops 4-0 Decision to Penn
Sep 02 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Senior midfielder Kristen Gray scored two goals to lead the defending Ivy League champion UPenn Quakers to a 4-0 victory against the Rutgers field hockey team Friday night at the RU Stadium Complex.
UPenn opened the scoring at the 1:20 mark as it converted on the first penalty corner of the game. Senior Lea Salese poked the first goal by Scarlet Knight goalie Rosalyn Wentko off of a pass from Cara Calahan and Meghan Rose. Calahan and Rose also assisted the next Quaker goal, which was scored by Gray off of another penalty corner at the 6:18 mark. Junior Tracy Statter added an unassisted goal at the 13:51 mark, making the score 3-0.
Gray added her second goal of the evening two minutes into the second half, sealing the victory for the Quakers.
Despite the outcome, Scarlet Knight’s head coach Liz Tchou knows each game is a learning experience for her young squad. “I know the kids are disappointed, but the score did not reflect how we played,” Tchou said. “We know we can come back on any team because our kids did not give up, even down 3-0.” Tchou went on to stress that the team could definitely communicate more on the field in order to make proper adjustments; however, she believes her team is on the right track. “We as coaches have seen so much improvement just in the last couple of weeks,” Tchou said. “We just have to take it one game at a time because each game gives us more chemistry.”
While the score was one-sided, the Scarlet Knight faced an impressive offensive team in UPenn and still maintained the edge in shots (8-7) and in penalty corners (9-8). Senior tri-captain Bobbi Jo Adams (Port Norris, NJ) and redshirt junior Katie Morad (Marlton, NJ) each had two shots on goal for RU. Sophomore goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) came up with a brilliant save in the first half when she was forced to take away the angle of an approaching UPenn forward after a Rutgers turnover. Wentko left the net, slid and swiped away the ball with her stick, spoiling a golden scoring opportunity for the Quakers.
The loss was the first suffered by the Scarlet Knights on the young season as they dropped to 2-1. The Quakers, playing in their season opener, improved to 1-0.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4, when they take on the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth at 1:00 p.m. at the RU Stadium Complex.
