Rutgers Bounces Back to Defeat Temple in Thriller
Sep 29 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) scored the game-tying goal in the 59th minute and senior co-captain Kara Spector (Easton, MD) notched the game-winner in the 67th minute as the Rutgers University field hockey team defeated the Temple Owls 2-1 Thursday evening at the RU Stadium Complex.
The Scarlet Knights and the Owls played to a scoreless first half, with no team registering even a shot in the first frame. The teams came out of the half and in the 47th minute, Temple forward Rachel Barber put the Owls on the board first after she converted a pass from Lindsay Holman to give the visitors the 1-0 advantage.
The Scarlet Knights responded however. In the 59th minute, Mattina fired a shot from the top of the circle that found its way into the top right hand corner of the net for the equalizer. Mattina's goal and assist gave her 12 points on the season, good enough for the team lead.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Owls had a chance to take the lead; however, Temple midfielder Alli Lokey's shot clanged off of the left post and the Scarlet Knights were able to clear.
In the 67th minute, RU was awarded a penalty corner and off of passes from Mattina and sophomore midfielder Corrine Bach (Moorestown, NJ), Spector was able to bang home the game-winner for her third goal of the season, and despite a late penalty corner awarded to the Owls with less than one minute remaining, RU was able to hang on.
RU head coach Liz Tchou was extremely proud of her team and explained as long as her team believes, they can accomplish anything. 'If our girls put their minds to it, they can do anything,' Tchou said. 'That's what we're trying to teach them.'
The Scarlet Knights were without starting goalie sophomore Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA), who was sidelined after taking a shot to the head during Sunday's match against Saint Joseph's. Freshman back Kim Scott (Somerdale, NJ) was called upon to play kicker-back for the Scarlet Knights and filled in impressively for Wentko. Scott used a helmet and chest protector whenever the Owls had a penalty corner; however, the kicker-back position is allowed to play the field as a regular during all other times.
The Scarlet Knights and the Owls each tallied three shots on goal but RU edged the Owls, 4-2, in penalty corners.
With the victory, the Scarlet Knights improved to 6-5 on the season. The loss drops the Owls to 4-8 on the year.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 2, when the travel to College Park, MD, to square off against the Terrapins of Maryland at 1:00 p.m.
