Zibman's Late Goal Leads Rutgers Past VCU
Sep 04 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Sophomore forward Marielle Zibman (Princeton Junction, NJ) scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to give the Rutgers field hockey team (3-1) a 3-2 win against the Rams of VCU (0-2) on Sunday, Sept. 4, at the RU Stadium Complex.
Rutgers opened the scoring off of a penalty corner at the 19 minute mark in the first half. Senior tri-captain Kara Spector (Easton, MD) received a pass from sophomore midfielders Corinne Bach (Moorestown, NJ) and Jocelyn Mattina (Bethlehem, PA) before poking it past VCU goalie Becca Leuzzi to give the Scarlet Knights the early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Catherine Badolato (Berlin, NJ) extended the RU lead to two when she fell to her knees in front of the VCU cage and tipped the ball past a sprawling Leuzzi at the 42 minute mark. Badolato's goal proved to be crucial because VCU responded with two unanswered goals, the first by freshman Nikki Lloyd and the second by junior Alyssa Collis, which tied the game with just over four minutes remaining in regulation.
RU answered immediately and at 3:44, just 20 seconds after the Rams tied the game, Zibman converted a pass from redshirt freshman Carrie Grainger (Island Heights, NJ) to give the Scarlet Knights a lead they would not relinquish.
Scarlet Knight head coach Liz Tchou noted that the win was a great one for her team, especially coming off of Friday's loss to Penn. 'We played with a lot of heart today,' Tchou said. 'We need to continue to attack once we have the lead but I was really proud of the way we finished. Our forwards did a great job of applying pressure and overall it was a great team effort. We have to work on some things but when we play together, we saw today what a great job we can do.'
Senior tri-captain back Heather Graver (Vincentown, NJ) played an inspired game on the defensive side of the field and prevented two VCU goals with two tremendous defensive saves, one in the first half and the other coming in the second half. Sophomore goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, PA) also provided three saves of her own en route to her third win of the season.
The Scarlet Knights went 1-1 on the weekend and improved to 3-1 with the VCU victory. The Rams, 0-2, remain winless on the season after the loss.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9, at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Newark, DE, to square off against the Delaware.Blue Hens.
