Rutgers Falls to No. 9 Pittsburgh, 76-68
Jan 18 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior guard Quincy Douby, the BIG EAST's leading scorer, tallied 27 points, but ninth-ranked Pittsburgh used a balanced attack that saw five different players score in double figures to post a 76-68 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday night before a sellout crowd of 8,065 at the RAC.
With the win, Pitt (15-0, 4-0 BIG EAST) remained one of three unbeaten Division I teams along with No. 1 Duke and No. 2 Florida, both of which won Wednesday. With the loss, Rutgers falls to 12-5 on the season, 2-2 in BIG EAST play.
The hotly-contested defensive-minded game featured seven ties and 10 lead changes.
Rutgers took a 38-37 lead into halftime after Douby banked in a long three-point shot with the shot clock winding down at the 11-second mark of the first half. It was the second time in the last week that the Scarlet Knights held a lead after the first 20 minutes against a Top-10 opponent. Last Wednesday, RU led third-ranked Villanova by five before losing in overtime.
After a Douby bucket with 17:00 left in the second half gave Rutgers its last lead at 43-42, the Panthers built an eight-point lead during stretch before Douby -- who sat for more than four minutes after picking up his third foul with 11:21 left – hit a long three-pointer to make it 57-52 with a little over five minutes left.
The Panthers' Carl Krauser answered with a three-pointer and Pitt never led by fewer than seven points after that as 7-0 junior center Aaron Gray went 7-of-10 from the line down the stretch. He finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Levon Kendall had 14 points to lead four other Panthers in double figures.
Rutgers led by a point at halftime largely because Douby, who had been held to one field goal in the game's first 11 minutes, managed to free himself from Pitt's pressure defense and wound up with 16 points in the opening half.
The junior guard gave the Scarlet Knights a 28-25 lead on an NBA-distance three-pointer, and Rutgers led by as much as 31-27 before Pitt tied the game on a four-point play by Keith Benjamin and then went ahead on two free throws by Sam Young.
In addition to Douby's 27 points, Rutgers received 12 points and five rebounds from freshman forward JR Inman. Junior swingman Marquis Webb played his usual solid all-around game, netting 10 points, handing out four assists while picking up two steals. The BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year candidate held Krauser to just six points, 11 below his team-leading average of 17.0
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Sunday, Jan. 22, when they travel to BIG EAST newcomer Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats at 2:00 p.m.
