Rutgers Shutout by UConn
Oct 14 | Field Hockey
STORRS, CT - The Rutgers field hockey team (5-10, 1-4 BIG EAST) dropped a 4-0 decision to BIG EAST opponent UConn (14-2, 3-1 BIG EAST). The Scarlet Knights offense was shut-down by a solid all-around effort from the Huskies.
Rutgers did not allow a goal until the 20 minute mark, but the offense never had a chance to generate any of its own momentum. Head coach Liz Tchou was discouraged her team didn't show more aggression and intensity earlier in the game.
"UConn is a very good team but we played timidly in the first half," she said. "I was disappointed we started playing well once the game was already out of reach."
UConn scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second. Lauren Aird and Lizzy Peijs each had two goals in the game to provide all of UConn's offense. Peijs also finished the game with one assist. Rutgers' offense, which failed to record a shot in the first half of play, took two shots in the second half but could not score a goal. Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) took both shots for Rutgers and RU goalie Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.) finished the game with eight saves.
Wentko did take several positives away from the loss, including the effort from the team later in the game.
"We just tried to keep up a good level of intensity," Wentko said, "and we were able to hold them at the end of the game."
The Scarlet Knights will play their second road game of the weekend tomorrow, Oct. 15, against Vermont, with game time at 3:30 p.m.
