Lewis Helps Rutgers Defeat Vermont 3-1
Oct 15 | Field Hockey
AMHERST, MA - The Rutgers field hockey team (6-10, 1-5 BIG EAST) defeated the University of Vermont (8-6), 3-1, to finish the weekend on a high note. Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.) led the team with two goals, while Kristen Johnson (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored the team's third goal of the day.
Following a 4-0 loss to BIG EAST opponent UConn on Oct. 14, head coach Liz Tchou called a team meeting to reassess the team's goals. The meeting had a positive effect, as the Scarlet Knights came out against Vermont energized and ready to play.
"We reset our goals," Tchou said, "and now we're just focused on how we play in these last several games. Today we played really well in the first half and we had really good passing, which is something we hadn't been able to do for the past few games. Everyone got involved in the play today, and that was good for us and it kept our confidence up."
Lewis had another outstanding day on offense for the Scarlet Knights, scoring two of her team's three goals to increase her team-leading total to 19.
"I really didn't play well yesterday," Lewis said, "but we all stepped it up today. I took responsibility as the center and as a member of the team to make sure we all pulled together and that everyone was on the same page. The win was a big confidence booster for us and now we're just looking forward to our next game."
Johnson scored the third goal of the game for Rutgers, her sixth of the season. Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.) made four saves for the Scarlet Knights while allowing just one goal, to Vermont's Danielle Collins. Karen Brewster (Chico, Calif.) also had a solid game for the Scarlet Kngihts, one of the best of her career at Rutgers.
"Karen definitely had one of her best games," Tchou said. "She made big moves for the entire 70 minutes of the game and showed definite improvement today."
Corinne Bach (Moorestown, N.J.), who had an assist on Lewis' first goal of the game, acknowledged the team's goals have changed and felt the win over Vermont was a positive way to start working on those goals.
"We just want to make the most of the rest of the season," she said, "and play good hockey for the rest of our games. Today we came out with positive energy and we put it together for a win."
The Scarlet Knights will return home to host its Louisville, its final BIG EAST opponent of the regular season, on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
