HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Rutgers softball team wrapped-up its 2006 fall schedule at the Hofstra Tournament, held on Saturday, Oct. 14, and Sunday, Oct. 15. Rutgers played five games in two days against Wagner, Long Island University, and host Hofstra.
On the opening day of the tournament, the Scarlet Knights dropped two 4-0 decisions to LIU and Hofstra. In the loss to LIU, Rutgers' offense managed just four hits as RU's hitters were blanked by LIU pitching. Nicole Freeman (Sandy, Utah) went the distance for the Scarlet Knights, allowing four runs in seven innings of work against the Blackbirds. RU then faced Hofstra in the second game of the day, where the team dropped its second-straight 4-0 decision. Elaine Piniat (Scotch Plains, N.J.) pitched five solid innings for the Scarlet Knights, allowing just one run in five innings of work. Christina Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.) gave up three runs in her two innings of work for Rutgers.
Rutgers fared better in its three games on Sunday. Rutgers lost the first game of the day before rebounding to close-out the tournament with a tie and a win against Wagner. Rutgers lost a 7-1 decision to host Hofstra. The Scarlet Knights managed just one run against the Pride, which came when Kristin Madoch (Glenview, Ill.) scored on a RBI by Jessica Crosby (Mill Creek, Wash.). RU then played to a scoreless tie with Wagner in the second game of the day. Yard rebounded from her shaky performance the day before by pitching five innings against the Seahawks, giving up just five hits and no earned runs. Mallory Miller (Anaheim, Calif.), Kim Hodges (Houston, Texas), and Yah Yah Rodriguez (Newark, N.J.) each had one hit for the Scarlet Knights in the tie. Rutgers' offense finally came alive in the second game against Wagner, as the Scarlet Knights beat the Seahawks, 10-7, in the team's final game of the tournament. Miller led the Scarlet Knights with three hits, while Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.), Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Jakie Debonis (Maywood, N.J.) each had two. Jakie's two hits drove in four of RU's 10 runs.
The Scarlet Knights will open their 2007 spring season at the Texas A & M Tournament from February 16-18.
