Havalchak Named to Preseason Tewaaraton Watch List

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) was selected to the initial 53-member watch list for the Tewaaraton Award, announced on Wednesday by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. The Tewaaraton Award is given annually to the nation's top lacrosse player.
Havalchak is a two-time ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and earned second team USILA All-America honors last year. As a freshman, he burst onto the scene by starting all 15 games and registering 188 saves, a 7.64 goals-against average and .625 save percentage. The Inside Lacrosse National Rookie of the Year in 2003, Havalchak had an equally-impressive sophomore campaign with 172 saves, 7.35 goals-against average and .628 save percentage. He had a career-high 22-save performance in the 2004 season opener against Dartmouth and also stopped 21 shots in a 14-10 victory over eventual national champion Syracuse. For his efforts, he was one of 15 nominees for the annual Tewaaraton Trophy.
In 41 career games, Havalchak has 496 saves, which ranks eighth on the RU career list, a 8.09 goals-against average and .590 save percentage.?? ??
Last summer, Havalchak was invited to the United States Men's Lacrosse National Team tryouts in Baltimore, MD.?? A total of 30 attackmen, 42 midfielders, 36 defensemen and 12 goalies were invited to participate by the selection committee, chaired by three-time U.S. team player Larry Quinn. The players were chosen from a field of approximately 200 applicants.
Under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Jim Stagnitta, Rutgers returns six starters and 20 letterwinners in 2006. The Scarlet Knights open the season on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they host Butler at the RU Stadium Complex (noon).
