HEMPSTEAD, NY – Rutgers junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) scored three goals and sophomore Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) netted two more as the women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 16 Hofstra, 9-7, at James M. Shuart Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
While the Scarlet Knights received ample offensive support from their veteran players like Batiuk, Shomo and senior Kathleen Holley (Pottstown, PA), it was the Rutgers freshmen the had a major impact.
Freshmen Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ), Mallory Tornetta (Kimberton, PA), Michelle Poole (Hackettstown, NJ) and Kathryn Lawrence (Pylesville, MD) combined for five points in the win, on three goals and two assists.
The Pride struck first as sophomore Becky Thorn put a shot past RU freshman goalie Sandra Abel (Monrovia, MD) to give Hofstra the early 1-0 advantage.
In a tight game that featured five ties and four lead changes, Rutgers was able to pull away by scoring three unanswered in response to Lauren Whitcomb’s game-tying goal in the early minutes of the second half.
Batiuk’s free-position goal at the 19:23 mark of the second half proved to be the difference after a late Hofstra goal made it a 9-7 final score.
With the win, the Scarlet Knights earned their first victory of the season and improved to 1-1. The loss dropped the No. 16 Pride to 0-2 on the season after its 16-9 loss to No. 1 Northwestern on Feb. 23.
RU will return to action on Saturday, March 4 when it heads to Newark, DE to take on the Delaware Blue Hens at 1:00 p.m.
