Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Falls to Syracuse, 18-8

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior Gaddy Fortune scored five goals and freshman Kathryn Rowan added six more to lead the 14th-ranked Syracuse Orange past the Rutgers University women's lacrosse team, 18-8, on Saturday afternoon at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights were unable to win their second consecutive BIG EAST game.
Before 10 minutes had been played, the Orange had jumped out to an early lead behind three goals by Fortune. Freshman Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, MD) put Rutgers on the board with the first of her two goals on the afternoon at the 20 minute mark; however, the Orange offense made life difficult for Rutgers freshman goalie Katherine Parker (Sykesville, MD), who was making the first start of her intercollegiate career.
Parker saw 38 Syracuse shots and was able to come up 14 saves; however, the Orange offense proved to be too much for the true freshman. Rutgers freshman Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ) scored her 16th goal at 12:12 of the first frame, her 17th at 4:45 and her 18th with just under 15 minutes remaining in the second half; however, Rutgers' offense provided little else.
RU junior Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, NJ) scored her first goal of the season while freshman Michelle Poole (Hackettstown, NJ) and junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) added one goal apiece for RU in the losing effort.
The loss evened the Scarlet Knights' record at 6-6 on the season. They are also 1-3 in BIG EAST Conference play.
The win improved the Orange to 9-4 on the season, including a 2-2 mark in the BIG EAST.
RU will be back in action next when it hosts the No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-2, 2-0) in a BIG EAST Conference tilt on Sunday, April 23 at 12:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
