PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers freshman pitcher Christina Yard (Hillsborough, NJ) has been selected to the BIG EAST Conference Softball Honor Roll, the league announced Monday.
Yard went 2-0 in her two appearances of the week, helping the Scarlet Knights earn victories against Rider on Thursday, April 13, and conference foe Villanova on Saturday, April 15.
With the Scarlet Knights trailing by one run (1-0), Yard entered the game in the fifth inning and held the Broncs' offensive attack in check. She pitched 6.0 innings in relief, allowing zero runs on just two hits, while striking out seven batters. Her stellar outing allowed Rutgers the opportunity to seize the come-from-behind 2-1 victory.
Yard got the start and her fifth win of the season in RU's 9-1 five-inning defeat of BIG EAST opponent Villanova. She surrendered one run on seven hits and struck out eight in the win. Along with her solid pitching performance, Yard also gave the Scarlet Knight offense a big boost to the tune of a grand slam. With the bases loaded and two strikes against her, Yard belted a ball deep over the fence in left-center field for her first career grand slam and second home run of the season. Yard posted a 0.64 ERA in 11.0 total innings last week.
