Rutgers Ends Home Stand With Win Over Albany
Apr 26 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, NJ- Behind a hat-trick by sophomore attacker Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ), the Rutgers women's lacrosse team edged Albany, 12-11, Wednesday afternoon at Yurcak Field.
Junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ), freshmen midfielder Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, MD) and attacker Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ) scored two goals apiece as the Scarlet Knights ended its three-game home stand on a high note.
Rutgers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead behind goals from Shomo, Lawrence and senior midfielder Kat Holley (Pottstown, PA); however, Albany quickly countered after a timeout by head coach Lindsey Hart. The Great Danes scored three unanswered goals to tie the score at 3-3 coming out of the timeout, but RU was quick to take action.
The Scarlet Knights countered Albany’s goal spree by scoring six unanswered goals of their own, including two apiece from Shomo and Frankoski, to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime.
Despite outscoring the Scarlet Knights by an 8-3 count in the second half, Rutgers was able to weather the Great Dane scoring attack. Key goals from Batiuk at the 16:17 mark to make it a 10-8 RU advantage and the eventual game-winner from Lawrence at the 7:09 mark allowed Rutgers to hang on to the 12-11 victory.
Freshman goalie Katherine Parker (Sykesville, MD) earned her third consecutive start, and while fellow freshman net-minder Sandra Abel (Monrovia, MD) earned some second half minutes after missing three games due to a bruised sternum, Parker reentered and tallied a total of seven saves to win the first intercollegiate game of her young career.
After the game, Parker explained that she was excited about her first career victory, but wants herself, and her team, to finish the season with strong performances against Cornell and Ohio State
“I was extremely happy to earn my first victory, because that is always the biggest one,” Parker said. “At the same time, we still have two games left and we want to carry this positive momentum into Ohio State this weekend and then against Cornell at home next week.”
With the win, the Scarlet Knights closed out their three-game home stand on a solid note and evened their season record at 7-7. They finished their in-conference schedule at 1-4 after their loss to Notre Dame on Sunday, April 23.
With the loss, the Great Danes fell to 8-8 on the year. They went 2-4 in America East Conference play.
The Scarlet Knights head to Columbus, OH to close out their 2006 road slate with a game against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday, April 30. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
