PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team, on the heels of a 12-11 victory over the Albany Great Danes on Wednesday, heads to Columbus, OH for a Sunday showdown with the Ohio State Buckeyes at 1:00 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Behind a hat-trick from sophomore attacker Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) and two goals apiece from junior midfielder Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ), freshman attacker Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, NJ) and freshman midfielder Katy Lawrence (Pylesville, MD), the Scarlet Knights were able to snap their mini two-game losing skid. While Albany outscored the Scarlet Knights by an 8-3 count in the second half, timely goals from Lawrence and Batiuk allowed RU to come out on top.
RU freshman goalie Katherine Parker (Sykesville, MD) stopped six shots against the Great Danes and picked up the first win of her collegiate career.
Batiuk has tallied 17 points in her last four games and has vaulted up on a number of Rutgers’ all-time statistical lists. Her 21 assists on the season give her 48 for her career, which puts her in fourth-place on RU’s all-time list. She began the 2006 season in 14th-place on RU’s all-time points list with 106, but her 55 total points on the season have catapulted her to stand alone in fifth-place all-time with 161 total points on 113 goals and 48 assists. The junior is also fourth on RU’s all-time draw-controls list with 85.
The Scarlet Knights and the Buckeyes met for the first time ever last season when Ohio State came to Piscataway in late April. On that day, RU bested the 19th-ranked Buckeyes by a 10-9 score behind a career-high six goals by Batiuk, including the game-winner to cap off the come-from-behind Rutgers victory.
RU enters Sunday’s game with a record of 7-7 after its win against Albany. With two games remaining on the schedule, head coach Laura Brand’s team has already exceeded last year’s win total of six and looks to go over the .500 mark with a win on Sunday.
The Buckeyes enter Sunday’s contest with a record of just 3-11 on the season and they hold a conference record of 1-3. While holding a home record of 2-3, the Buckeyes have won just one of eight road games on the 2006 season.
After their match-up with Ohio State, the Scarlet Knights will return home for their season finale, set to take place on Saturday, May 6. RU plays host to the Cornell Big Red and will look to close out their 2006 season with a win on Senior Day. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
