BURLINGTON, NC - The Rutgers softball team (0-2) fell in its first two contests of the 2006 season at the Elon Invitational on Friday, Feb. 24. Campbell topped the Scarlet Knights 5-1 in game one, while RU loss to Towson 6-1 in the second match-up of the day.
In the day’s opening game, Campbell got on the board first with an Ashley Jones double that scored Jessica Huffman from second base. The Scarlet Knights tied the score 1-1 in the fourth when sophomore Mallory Miller (Anaheim, CA) started off the inning with a single up the middle. Freshman Kim Hodges (Houston, TX) advanced Miller to second on a sacrifice bunt, while junior Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL) drove in the run with a triple to right field.
Campbell eventually pulled away with the victory after a three-run fifth inning, ending the game with a final score of 5-1. Senior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched in game one against the Camels, going 4.2 innings with four hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
The score remained knotted at zero in game two until the fourth when Towson drove in a pair of scores, taking a two run lead (2-0). The Scarlet Knights put up a score of their own when Miller, who singled in the bottom of the fourth, was plated on an error by the shortstop.
RU would get as close a one run (2-1) before the Tigers secured the win with a four-score sixth inning. Freshman Christina Yard (Hillsborough, NJ) earned her first career collegiate start, pitching 5.1 innings with seven hits and three earned runs, while junior Nicole Freeman (Sandy, UT), a junior-college transfer out of Texas, also saw her first action for the Scarlet Knights. Freeman appeared in both games, pitching a combined 3.0 innings in relief.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25, for a pair of games at 1:15 and 3:30 p.m. RU will take on the University at Albany in game one and a team still to be determined in the second game.
