PISCATAWAY, NJ - Misty Beaver has been named an assistant coach with the Rutgers softball program, first-year head coach Jay Nelson has announced.
A former standout in the circle at Seton Hall, Beaver will reunite with Nelson, who was an assistant coach at Seton Hall during her playing career.
"Prior to being offered the head coaching position at Rutgers, I knew that one of the most important decisions I would make would be to choose a great coaching staff," said Nelson. "The qualities that I believe are most important when choosing someone are honesty, integrity, loyalty and great character. The first person that came to my mind was Misty Beaver. Anyone can teach the game by going to clinics, reading books or watching tapes, but only a special person like Misty has the character that will enable her to reach our athletes and help mentor them in life as well as softball."
Beaver earned numerous honors and set many records at SHU. She was a two-time second-team all-ECAC honoree, a three-time first-team all-Northeast Region selection, and a second-team all-BIG EAST player from 1999-2001. She still holds the third (185), fourth (173), and fifth (153) spots on Seton Hall's single-season strikeouts list and is sixth on the team's all-time earned run average leader board (1.30). She recorded 54 career victories, placing her third in Seton Hall's win category, and made 101 pitching appearances for the Pirates while throwing 579 innings.
"I am honored Jay has asked me to coach with him and I am thrilled to usher in a new era of Rutgers softball with him," said Beaver. "I am excited to be back in the BIG EAST and at this level of competition. I am excited to be with Rutgers and I am looking forward to sharing my excitement with the team."
In addition, Beaver enjoyed playing success in the amateur ranks. She was a member of the 2001 Decatur Twisters of the Amateur Softball Association. The Twisters tied for fourth place in the Women's Majors and tied for fifth place at the Canada Cup.
Following her playing career, Beaver served as the varsity softball coach for Rockford (IL) Christian High School from 2002-2006. A native of Machesney Park, IL, she majored in elementary education and religious studies at Seton Hall.
