NEWARK, N.J. - Jenifer Anzivino's (Middletown, N.J.) goal in the 68th minute lifted the Rutgers women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over BIG EAST-rival Seton Hall. The match, played at Lubetkin Field on the campus of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, marked the BIG EAST opener for the Scarlet Knights as they improved to 5-1 on the season, 1-0 in BIG EAST play.
The win over Seton Hall is the first in three seasons for Scarlet Knights against the Pirates. The 2006 season also is the first under head coach Glenn Crooks where the team has gotten off to such a strong start. The last time the Scarlet Knights posted a five or more wins in their first six matches was during the 1996 season when Rutgers rattled off six-straight victories to open the year.
The Scarlet Knights got off to a quick start in their first BIG EAST win of the year, posting five shots in the first half and holding the Pirates to just one offensive attempt. The backline of Kim Brand????o (Rahway, N.J.), Jaime Komar (Matawan, N.J.), Meghan Ryan (Crofton, Md.), Nina Montero (Vineland, N.J.), and Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, N.J.) kept Seton Hall from generating a threatening offensive effort, holding the Pirates to just four shots in the match.
In the second half, Anzivino scored the lone goal of the contest after a scramble 10 feet in front of the goal. Coming out of a pack, Anzivino blasted it past Seton Hall goalie Amanda Becker to give Rutgers the eventual game-winning score.
In goal for the Scarlet Knights, Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) posted two saves and earned her second shutout of the season.
Rutgers will be off the remainder of the weekend until Tuesday, Sept. 19, when the team hosts Loyola at Yurcak Field at 7:00 p.m.
