Moore Leads Rutgers Past Georgetown in OT
Sep 17 | Men's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer team (2-5 ,1-3 BIG EAST) won a 1-0 overtime decision over BIG EAST opponent, Georgetown (3-5, 2-2 BIG EAST). Chris Moore (Gosforth, England) scored the match's lone goal in the first overtime period to give the Scarlet Knights their second win of the season and their first against a BIG EAST opponent.
Rutgers dominated play throughout regulation and the first overtime period. Despite failing to score a goal in regulation time, the Scarlet Knights' offense was in control. Rutgers, for the second-consecutive game, again out-shot its opponent, this time by a 24-5 margin. The team recorded eight shots in the first half, and 11 more in the second half. Georgetown's offense struggled more than Rutgers, as the Hoyas managed just five shots in the game.
In the first half of play, Rutgers had its share of opportunities to score. Tomislav Barisic (Osijek, Croatia) had a shot smothered by Hoyas' goalie Joe Devine just over ten minutes into the game, and at the 9:53 mark in the first half, Nick LaBrocca (Howell, N.J.) had a shot go wide to end another scoring opportunity for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers continued to control the game in the second half. Just over nine minutes into the second half, Adam Lloyd (Warwick, N.J.) passed the ball to Barisic whose shot went high and just under two minutes later, Adam Sternberger (Mays Landing, N.J.) fired another shot on the Hoyas' goal, but Devine was able to make the save. The end of the second half ended on a hard shot by Georgetown's Mike Glaccum that RU goalie Dylan Hastings (Tabernacle, N.J.) was able to save to send the match into overtime.
In the first overtime period, Rutgers' offense came out attacking and with just 3:18 remaining in the period, Moore nailed the game-winning shot from nearly 30-yards right past Devine to give Rutgers the overtime victory. It was Moore's second goal of the season.
Hastings, in his first regular-season start, got the shutout as Brinker Dailey (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Bart Koffeman (The Hague, Netherlands) anchored a defense that kept Georgetown's offense out of the game.
Head coach Bob Reasso was pleased with both the way his team played and with the outcome of the game.
"We were the better team today. It's nice to get 39 shots in two games and even though we didn't get goals on Friday, we're creating more offense. We won today because we finally got somebody to step up and make a big play for us. It's good to get a win and have the guys start feeling good about themselves."
Rutgers is back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when the Scarlet Knights welcome Princeton to Yurcak Field at 7:00 p.m.
