Rutgers Wraps Up Play at Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Rutgers softball team concluded play on Sept. 17 at the Binghamton Invitational. The Scarlet Knights dropped its first game on Sunday to Army before posting a win over Vermont in the afternoon.
In the 5-3 loss to Army, Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.) had an impressive showing, going 4-4 with a homerun and two doubles. Kalka also had two RBI in the game. Kristin Madoch (Glenview, Ill) and Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J) both had doubles for the Scarlet Knights. Madoch posted Rutgers' third RBI in the game.
Rutgers got a 7-1 win over Vermont in its second game of the day as Valiente led the team with a homerun and three RBI. Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.) went 2-4 on the day, including a single in the third inning. Ashley Hartley (Ripon, Calif.), Kim Hodges (Houston, Texas) and Madoch all had one hit in the game for the Scarlet Knights.
On Sept. 16, the Scarlet Knights started the day with a win over LeMoyne before dropping its second game to Fordham in extra innings.
In the first game, a 2-0 win over LeMoyne, Christina Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.) threw a two-hitter, including seven strikeouts. Leading the Scarlet Knights from the plate was Kristin Madoch (Glenview, Ill.) who went 2-3, including a double in the first inning and a triple in the fourth inning.
In their second game of the day, the Scarlet Knights fell to Fordham in extra innings, 5-4. Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.) both had hits in the first inning as Rutgers took an early 3-0 lead. In the third, Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J) brought in another run for the Scarlet Knights giving them a 4-2 lead after the third inning.
In the sixth, Fordham tied the game to send it to extra innings. In the eighth inning, Rutgers was unable to generate any offense, leaving the score tied. Fordham capitalized on the opportunity, as the Rams' Erin Fisher brought in the winning run.
