Rutgers Goes 2-3 at Carole Weil Tournament

ALLENTOWN, PA -The Rutgers softball team posted a 2-3 record at the Carole Weil Tournament, held Sept. 23 and 24 in Allentown, Pa. The Scarlet Knights' two victories came against Temple and Fordham. Pitcher Nicole Freeman (Sandy, Utah) recorded a one-hit shutout in the win over Fordham.
Rutgers played its first game of the tournament on Saturday against Temple, a 7-2 win over the Owls. Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) went one-for-two against Temple and scored two runs, while teammate Kristin Madoch (Glenview, Ill.) had one hit and three RBIs in the game. Temple had just three hits off Scarlet Knight pitching.
The team then dropped a 4-0 decision to Lehigh in its second game of the day. Rutgers managed just three hits against the Mountaineers' pitchers. Lehigh's Lisa Sweeney had one hit and drove in two of her team's four runs.
In the final game on Saturday, the Scarlet Knights were narrowly defeated by Fordham, 3-2. Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.) had two of Rutgers' four hits in the game. Fordham's Allison Twarowski had two hits and scored one run in her team's win.
Rutgers started the second day of competition with a 3-0 shutout over the Fordham team that had defeated them on Saturday. Rutgers' starting pitcher Freemantossed a one-hit shutout while striking-out five Fordham players en route to the victory. Valiante had two hits in the game, driving in one run and scoring another for the team. Erin Fisher had the only hit for the Rams.
The Scarlet Knights dropped its final game of the tournament, a 5-0 loss to Kutztown. Kutztown's Adriane Willmer and Krista Cameron each had two hits. Jessica Crosby (Mill Creek, Wash.) started the game for Rutgers and pitched solidly, giving up just one run before Christina Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.) entered the game in relief and allowed Kutztown its final four runs.
Rutgers is back in action at the Pride Softball Fall Class on Oct. 1, where the team will face Caldwell and two other teams still to be named, with play beginning at 10:45 a.m.
