PISCATAWAY, NJ - Alicia Hall (Port Republic, NJ) scored a goal and chipped in an assist to lead the Rutgers' women's soccer team (3-0) to a 3-0 win over Monmouth on Sept. 5 in the team's home opener at Yurcak Field.
Head coach Glenn Crooks was pleased the Scarlet Knights were able to get their home slate out to a good start.
"We want to dominate at home. We want to make sure that when people come here they understand that it's our turf, but its our responsibility to make it our turf."
The Scarlet Knights got off to a quick start offensively, taking three shots in the first 10 minutes of the match. Karla Schacher (Tolfield, Alberta) produced offense early for Rutgers, taking two out of the first three shots.
In the 19th minute of the game, Hall gave Rutgers the early lead, scoring off an assist from Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, NJ). Edmonds nailed a cross from the right side of the field as Hall came up with the loose ball and put it in the back of the net for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers had a number of opportunities to score nearing the end of the first period. Leia Rispoli (Kendall Park, NJ) put a pass near the top of the goalie box at the 6:45 mark, but Monmouth goalie Katie Buffa was able to grab the ball just before Kim Mineo (Glen Rock, NJ) could get a foot on it. Buffa came up with another big play with 5:15 remaining in the half on a shot from Rispoli. Following a Rutgers corner kick, Courtney Roarty (Edison, NJ) came up with a loose ball and knocked it to Rispoli who was wide open in the left side of the box. Rispoli took a shot to the low left corner of the goal, but Buffa came up with the save for the Hawks.
In the second, the Scarlet Knights continued to put pressure on Monmouth, tallying six shots. In the 54th minute, Jenifer Anzivino (Middletown, NJ) gave Rutgers a 2-0 lead on an unassisted goal. Battling traffic in front of the goal, Anzivino came up with the loose ball, dribbled in and scored for the Scarlet Knights, posting her first career goal.
Kim Brand????o (Rahway, NJ) scored the final goal for the Scarlet Knights in the 70th minute, the second of her career. After a scramble in the goal box, Hall came up with it and made a pass to Brand????o on the right side of the box. Despite the slippery conditions, Brand????o was able to get a foot on it as it dribbled past Buffa in the low right corner of the goal for the Rutgers score.
In goal, freshman Erin Guthrie (Sparta, NJ) got her first career shut out "On the Banks," posting three saves between the poles for the Scarlet Knights. A solid defensive effort from Nina Montero (Vineland, NJ), Meghan Ryan (Crofton, MD), Jaime Komar (Matawan, NJ, Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, NJ) and Brand????o helped contain the Monmouth offense, allowing only five shots in the game. NEC Rookie of the Week, Andrea Lopez, who scored two goals in the Hawks' first two matches, was held to just one shot in the match.
"As a team we defended with a lot of energy, so Monmouth didn't really get too many opportunities [to score]," Crooks said. "Erin controlled the box very well. She's learning to work with the backs that are all new to her and they're all becoming more comfortable playing together."
The Scarlet Knights will host Stanford on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7:00 p.m. at Yucak Field. Rutgers will play at home again on Sunday, Sept. 10, as the team hosts Farleigh Dickinson at 3:00 p.m.
