Rutgers Falls to No. 17 William & Mary, 2-0

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers field hockey team (2-4) played inspired at the outset, but it was not enough as RU fell to No. 17 William & Mary (5-0) 2-0 Sept. 8 in the Scarlet Knights' home opener.
RU had the dangerous opportunities to begin the game, outshooting the Tribe 3-1 early in the contest, but neither team could find the back of the goal until 6:25 before halftime, when Becky Van Zee cashed in on an open look from the upper-left corner of the circle.
William & Mary later made it a 2-0 contest midway through the second half when Gina Cimarelli dribbled along the line and squirted the ball just in front of the mouth of the goal, where a waiting Kim Hedley finished it off for the score.
"It's encouraging to see how far we have come, even in just a year," said fourth-year Rutgers head coach Liz Tchou. "They are really disappointed about the loss, but we played some good hockey and played with a lot of intensity. All we ask is that they take what they learn in practice and apply it in games and solve different game situations, and they showed some of that tonight.
"We had just a couple of little mistakes, but they proved to be costly. The team is in a positive mode, and we have to go into Delaware (Sunday) knowing we can defeat any team."
Junior Rosalyn Wentko (Dallas, Pa.), a selection to last week's BIG EAST Honor Roll, was again solid in goal for the Scarlet Knights with her eight saves.
"It's encouraging to see us play well, even if it is for just part of the game, because we know that we can be that good," said Carrie Grainger (Island Heights, N.J.). "We just didn't finish. They played a good game and finished, and we didn't, and that was the difference tonight."
Rutgers will finish the weekend with a home contest against Delaware Sunday, Sept. 10, at 1:00 p.m.
