PISCATAWAY N.J. - The Rutgers field hockey team fell short on Friday evening, dropping a 2-1 BIG EAST contest to Providence at RU Stadium Turf.
The Scarlet Knights (7-9) put the game's first score on the board in the 15th minute. Sophomore Karen Brewster (Chico, Calif.) tallied her second goal of the year off a scramble in front of the cage. She converted from seven yards out to push Rutgers to a 1-0 edge.
"We scored first which was great, but we have a little bit of a tendency to get excited that we scored," head coach Liz Tchou noted after the game. "However, we needed to keep thinking its 0-0 and keep attacking."
The Friars knotted the contest three minutes later when Michalagh Stoddard, off a penalty corner, faked the shot and took one dribble and scored.
The winning tally came six minutes into the second half, also off a penalty corner. Junior Jessica Lane faked the set and kept the ball in her control, dribbling twice before firing past RU goalkeeper Leslie Kelly.
Providence posted a 10-8 shot advantage over Rutgers. In addition, the Friars had an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
"The losses are frustrating but we have improved so much from last year and we are really challenging the other teams. We just have to finish."
Rutgers steps out of league play on Sunday, Oct. 21, traveling to Albany for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
