SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Five Rutgers women's lacrosse players earned BIG EAST awards at Thursday night's banquet. Senior Katie Batiuk (Jackson, N.J.) and sophomore Nina Frankoski (Maplewood, N.J.) were named to the conference's first team, while seniors Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, N.J.) and Anne Marchitello (Medford Lakes, N.J.) and freshman Jessica Davis (Moorestown, N.J.) earned spots on the All-BIG EAST second team.
For Batiuk, this is the third time she has been named to the conference's first team, as she earned first team honors in 2005 and 2006 in addition to being named the 2005 Midfielder of the Year. This season, Batiuk was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on April 9 and named to Honor Roll on April 23. The midfielder finished the regular season tied for the team lead in goals with 40. The Jackson, N.J. native also recorded six assists for team-high 46 points. She scored a season-high five goals in back-to-back games (vs. UConn and Manhattan) and scored at least one goal in 15 of the team's 16 games this season.
Frankoski, a sophomore attacker, was tied with Batiuk for the team-lead in goals with 40 through 16 regular-season games. She also had five assists during the regular swason and was second on the team in shots with 83. Like Batiuk, she earned a weekly conference honor this season, being named to the April 2 honor roll after tallying eight points, all goals, in two games, including a team-best seven goals against Temple on March 30.
Farewell had a successful senior campaign, netting eight goals and recording seven assists while scooping-up 29 groundballs, the second-highest total on the team. She started all 16 of RU's regular-season contests and won 17 draw-controls this spring. Farewell earned a spot on the BIG EAST honor roll for the Week of April 5.
Marchitello and Davis earned their honors after helping anchor an RU defense that allowed just 161 goals by its opponents and forced 127 turnovers. Marchitello was named the conference's Defender of the Week on Feb. 26 after the team's double-overtime season-opening win against Cornell, a game in which she recorded two groundballs and caused two turnovers. She had a season-high three groundballs in a 14-10 win over Temple and caused two turnovers by the sixth-ranked Irish in the Scarlet Knights 8-7 win on April 21.
Davis, the only Rutgers rookie to earn All-BIG EAST honors, played in 16 of the Scarlet Knights games this season and led the team in groundballs with 42. She had four groundballs and caused one turnover in Rutgers' 11-6 win over Monmouth on March 3, and registered a season-best nine groundballs against No. 1 Northwestern on April 23.
The inaugural BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Championship begins on April 27, as No. 1 seed Georgetown takes on No. 4 seed Notre Dame at 5:30 p.m. That contest will be followed by No. 2 seed Syracuse against No. 3 seed Rutgers. The Championship Game is set for April 29 at 2:30 p.m., and will be televised live on College Sports Television: CSTV.
