Rutgers Defeats St. Joseph's, 11-5

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -The Rutgers women's lacrosse team (9-2) recorded its ninth win of the season with an 11-5 defeat of St. Joseph's (4-3) on April 3 in Philadelphia, Pa. Three Scarlet Knight players netted hat tricks while RU's defense held the Hawks to just five goals, the fewest by an RU opponent this season.
Katie Batiuk, Katy Lawrence and Nina Frankoski each scored three goals while Brooke Cantwell netted two. The Scarlet Knights out-shot the Hawks, 30-17, and committed just eight turnovers to St. Joseph's 18.
The game was a story of two halves, as the teams found themselves tied 3-3 at the midway point. The Hawks opened the first half of play with a goal by Jessica Westlake at the 18:47 mark. RU's Lawrence would tie the game at one with the first of her two first-period scores. The Scarlet Knights took a 3-2 lead at the 10.37 mark but SJU's Jenna Martino tied the game at three with 6:48 remaining, a score that held through halftime.
Rutgers' offense came out strong to start the second half, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead. The Scarlet Knights would score the final two goals of the game to secure the 11-5 victory.
Sandra Abel got the start in goal for Rutgers but after allowing the three first-half goals, Erika Page took over in the second period of play. Page finished with four saves and allowed two goals.
St. Joseph's was led in scoring by Martino and Westlake, who both netted two goals. Suzy Herliey played all 60 minutes in goal for the Hawks, allowing 11 goals and making 14 saves against the Scarlet Knights.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action when they host BIG EAST rival UConn on Saturday, April 7, at 12:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
