SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Despite a 1-0 lead on a goal in the first half from junior Adam Lloyd (Warwick, N.Y.), Seton Hall rallied back to top the Rutgers men's soccer team (3-5-1, 2-2 BIG EAST) 4-1 on Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange.
"I thought we played pretty well in the first half," said head coach Bob Reasso. "We were up 1-0, but the turning point was when they scored late in the first."
Lloyd, who scored the team's first goal of the season at Oakland University Sept. 2, put the Scarlet Knights up 1-0 in the first half with his second tally of the year. In the 26th minute, senior Chris Moore (Gosforth, England) played a free kick into the penalty area, as Lloyd headed the ball past Seton Hall goalie Paul McHenry for the early lead.
However, the Scarlet Knights' 1-0 lead would only hold up for the next six minutes, as the Pirates responded with an equalizer in the 32nd minute. SHU's Eliseo Giusfredi tied the game at 1-1 on a pass from Christian Vercollone. Giusfredi took part in all four of Seton Hall's scores, ending the game with one goal and three assists.
With the game tied at halftime, Seton Hall turned up the intensity after the intermission, out-shooting the Scarlet Knights 15-1. The Pirates also held an advantage in the corner kick department, edging RU 11-4. Seton Hall secured the eventual 4-1 victory with goals in the 58th, 74th and 79th minute.
"In the second half, they were better in all honesty," said Reasso. "They were better in the attacking third and they deserved to win. We have to tip our hats to them and move on; we got a harsh lesson today. All the credit goes to Seton Hall, they were better."
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 3, for a home match against Villanova at 7:00 p.m. On the season, Villanova is 8-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Scarlet Knights are 8-4-2 all-time against the Wildcats.
