PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 16 Rutgers field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to 19th-ranked Providence on Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights fall to 10-3 on the year and 1-3 in BIG EAST action while the Friars improve to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in league play.
“I think we are approving and but not being able to score in a BIG EAST game for the second time in a row is disappointing,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “We had several opportunities right in front of the PC goalkeeper. We have to be the aggressors in the circle and be able to touch the ball first off the goalie’s pad. To me, it is just being able to finish better. On a positive note, Karen Brewster and Amy Lewis are both creating a lot of opportunities for us.”
The Friars took a 1-0 lead into halftime after scoring the lone goal of the opening half just 3:43 into the game. Junior Adrienne Marois was credited with the goal on a penalty corner option. Rutgers had a 6-5 edge in penalty corners but failed to convert.
In the second half, the Friars added an insurance goal in the 45th minute from junior forward Nellie Poulin.
RU had opportunities, pelting the PC defense with 15 shots in the second half and a 20-11 advantage in the game. Senior Amy Lewis had nine of the team’s 20 shots. Friars goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain had nine saves for her fifth shutout of the season.
Rutgers takes on Maine on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Noon in a neutral site game at Providence.
