Rutgers Men's Soccer Takes On NJIT in Midweek Action
Oct 21 | Men's Soccer
NEWARK, N.J. – The Rutgers men’s soccer team will look to rebound from a two-match slide when it travels North to take on New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Lubetkin Field at 7:00 p.m.
The contest will also feature a matchup between Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso and his former pupil, Pedro Lopes, a two-time All-American while at RU from 1990-94. Lopes, who is currently the mentor for NJIT, made four NCAA appearances as a player and began his coaching career at Rutgers, spending seven seasons as an assistant.
The Scarlet Knights (5-6-3) are coming off a tough 1-0 decision at Cincinnati this past Saturday (Oct. 18). The teams played to a scoreless first half, but a goal in the 55th minute put the Bearcats ahead as they held on for the victory.
Sophomore Dilly Duka (Montville, N.J.) leads RU with eight goals while freshman Sam Archer (Queens, N.Y.) has a pair of tallies on the year. Five other Scarlet Knights have combined for the remaining five goals this season.
Leading the team in the assist category is senior Kevin McFadden (Midlothian, Va.) with six, a mark which ranks second in the conference. Archer has added two assists, while four other players each have one.
NJIT enters the match 1-12-1 overall with its only victory of the season coming in a 3-2 defeat of Manhattan (Sept. 13). The Highlanders have seven goals on the year as Erik Magnusson leads the way with two, while five players have one apiece. Magnusson also paces the team with four assists on the season.
Wednesday’s contest will serve as the final non-conference match before Rutgers continues its run for a berth into the BIG EAST Championship. RU will take on three formidable opponents in 11th-ranked Louisville (Oct. 25), fourth-ranked St. John’s (Oct. 28) and the No. 12 team in the country in USF (Nov. 1). The three teams are atop the Red Division with the Red Storm (19 pts.) leading the way, followed by the Bulls (16 pts.) and Cardinals (13 pts.).
The first six teams in each division’s standings earn a place in the post-season tournament. The Scarlet Knights are currently in seventh place with eight points, sitting just behind Syracuse in the sixth spot with 10.
