PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers men’s soccer team (5-7-3, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) will look to secure valuable points in the conference standings when it hosts Red Division foe Louisville (9-4-2, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
“We’re looking forward to the match,” said head coach Bob Reasso. “It should be a good game, Louisville is an outstanding team and Ken [Lolla, head coach] is one of the better coaches in the country.
“They’re on a bit of a rough patch themselves, losing three straight which is tough for them but they do have a good team. They’re a very conservative team, they look to sit in and beat you on a counter or set pieces. It is here, on our ground and our guys trained really well so we’re looking forward to having a good performance.”
The Scarlet Knights are currently one spot out of contention for a berth to the BIG EAST Championship. RU has three regular-season conference matchups remaining against the top three squads in the Red Division, including Saturday’s tilt against Louisville.
Rutgers is coming off a 2-1 loss at NJIT this past Wednesday. The Scarlet Knights pulled ahead with a goal in the 35th minute from sophomore Sal Fusari (Union, N.J.) but a pair of scores in the second half by the Highlanders reversed the momentum and gave NJIT the victory.
Sophomore Dilly Duka (Montville, N.J.) leads RU with eight goals while freshman Sam Archer (Queens, N.Y.) has a pair of tallies on the year. Six other Scarlet Knights have combined for the remaining six goals this season.
Leading the team in the assist category is senior Kevin McFadden (Midlothian, Va.) with six, a mark which ranks second in the conference. Archer has added two assists, while four other players each have one.
The 14th-ranked Cardinals have recently dropped three straight games, including back-to-back conference losses to USF and Villanova. Louisville has 22 goals on the season, the fourth-highest total in the BIG EAST. Colin Rolfe leads the squad with five tallies, while three other Cardinals are tied with three apiece. Pacing the team in assists is Aaron Clapham who has seven followed by four others with two each.
Rutgers will close out its home schedule on Tuesday night against former Scarlet Knight All-American Dave Masur and his St. John’s squad at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Tampa, Fla. to face USF on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
