Rutgers Softball Releases 2009 Schedule

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers softball team will again play a very challenging schedule, as the Scarlet Knights open the 2009 season with four highly-competitive tournaments and host twelve matchups at the RU Softball Complex, head coach Jay Nelson announced. Rutgers will face a total of eleven schools that went on to last year's NCAA Tournament.
RU will begin the season in Mississippi, at the Mississippi State Tournament on February 20-22, where it will first face the host school, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, and Evansville. The Scarlet Knights will then head to Texas, to take part in the QTI Invitational February 27 to March 1. Rutgers is slated to face Louisiana Tech, Baylor, Louisiana-Monroe, and Louisiana Tech.
The Scarlet knights will venture to California State Northridge, for the Matador Worth Invitational, as they take on the host school in a double header, along with Quinnipiac, and Portland State on March 6-8. Rutgers will compete in its fourth and final tournament of the year when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the FAU Tournament on March 13-15. RU will go up against Liberty, Purdue, Texas AM, Bethune Cookman, and tournament host Florida Atlantic.
Rutgers will open BIG EAST season against USF on March 18 and Louisville on March 22 in doubleheaders, before they come home for the first time to play fellow conference members Villanova on March 25 in a doubleheader. Rutgers will then leave the RU Stadium Complex for two away matches on March 26 at Hofstra and March 28 in a doubleheader at Providence.
Rutgers returns home for three- consecutive dates on April 1, 4, and 5, all doubleheaders against Stony Brook, St. Johns, and Georgetown. RU will continue its season with two away games on April 7 at Rider and April 10 in a doubleheader at BIG EAST rival UConn.
The squad comes home for eight consecutive matchups and three of them are against conference teams. The contest against Monmouth (April 14) starts off the homestand, followed by six straight doubleheaders against Princeton (April 16), DePaul (April 18), Notre Dame (April 19), Marist (April 21), Fairleigh Dickinson (April 23), and Seton Hall (April 26).Rutgers will close out its home schedule against Long Island University (April 30).
The Scarlet Knights will complete the 2009 regular-season on May 2 and 3 in doubleheaders at Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
RU will look to advance to the 2009 BIG EAST conference which will be held over three days, May 7-9, at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville Kentucky.
