COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team will take on its fourth ranked opponent this season when it faces No. 18 Denver at a neutral site in College Park, Md., Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights (3-6) have dropped two consecutive games after winning three in a row. Denver (6-3) has won four straight contests.
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 7-6 loss to Old Dominion on Monday afternoon in Norfolk, Va. Freshman Marley Welsh (Jarretsville, Md.) scored twice to lead RU, while Sandra Abel (Monrovia, Md.) recorded nine saves and helped a solid Rutgers defense hold Old Dominion to its lowest score this season and its lowest scoring output since tallying six goals against Delaware on April 15, 2007.
The Pioneers have not played outside of Denver since Feb. 17, when they fell at North Carolina 15-9. Denver is 0-2 on the road with losses to No. 7 UNC and No. 6 Duke. UD last played on March 21, defeating Cincinnati 19-3. Sophomore Lexi Sanders and freshman Kristin Keravich each tallied three goals in the win. Junior Steph Coyne leads the team with 49 points on 20 goals and 29 assists.
Today's game marks the first meeting between the two teams. This season RU and UD have each lost to Georgetown, as the Hoyas defeated Denver 12-11 on March 2 in Denver, Colo., and dropped RU 11-5 on March 22 in Washington, D.C.
After today's game, RU will return to action against St. Joseph's at Yurcak Field on Wednesday, April 2, at 4:00 p.m.
