PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Two players on the Rutgers women's lacrosse team received BIG EAST weekly awards, the league announced on Monday. Sophomore defender Jessica Davis (Moorestown, N.J.) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the week, while sophomore attacker Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. The team went 1-1 last week, splitting a pair of one-run games.
Davis helped lead the Scarlet Knights' defense in holding opponents to an average of 8.0 goals per game in two games last week. RU held Old Dominion to seven goals in a 7-6 loss on Monday, March 24, marking ODU's lowest scoring output this season and its lowest total since tallying six goals against Delaware on April 15, 2007. Rutgers then limited No. 18 Denver to a season-low tying nine goals in a 10-9 overtime victory on Friday, March 28, well off the Pioneers' average of 15 goals per game. Davis also held Denver's leading scorer, Steph Coyne, below her average of 5.4 points per game. This is her first BIG EAST award.
"Jess has been playing well, especially in the last few games," said head coach Laura Brand. "You can see her confidence is growing and this is allowing her to take more chances defensively. Her speed and technical ability really allow her to control most attackers."
Cantwell was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, marking the second time this season she has earned a conference award, and the third time in her career. She totaled 10 points on eight goals and two assists during the week, while also recording three ground balls, three draw controls and one caused turnover in the team's two games. Cantwell posted a career-high six goals and a career-high eight points in RU's overtime win over Denver.
"Brooke has had good games this season, but the Denver game really showed what she can do," said Brand. "She has a great ability to read defenses and her strength and presence on the attacking end is hard to defend."
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, April 2, when it faces St. Joseph's at Yurcak Field at 4:00 p.m.
