PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers University softball team's (16-21, 2-6 BIG EAST) doubleheader against Notre Dame was cancelled Saturday. The Scarlet Knight will play a doubleheader against the DePaul Blue Demons on Sunday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m.
RU has been on a roll this week winning three straight games. The Scarlet Knights defeated Rider 10-2 on Tuesday, and swept a doubleheader with Princeton on Wednesday. In BIG EAST play, Rutgers is 2-6 on season following a doubleheader split against Louisville last weekend.
Rutgers is third in the BIG EAST in hits with 256, and assists with 367. RU also has the fourth-best total of runs scored with 145 so far this season.
Leading the Scarlet Knights is freshman first base Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.), who has a team-high batting average of .327 to go along with 19 runs batted in this season. Junior outfielder Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.) leads RU with 19 runs and seven stolen bases. Another junior, shortstop Kate Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), is hitting .253 this season and has a team-high 24 RBI after an outstanding performance against Princeton. Valiante drove in seven runs and hit two home runs in the first game, including a grand slam.
DePaul (24-12) is 3-3 against conference opponents, but DePaul is the only nationally ranked team in the BIG EAST. Sandy Vojik (.304, 14 RBI), and Amber Patton (.385, 4 RBI) lead the Blue Demons. Shea Warren (.319, 2 RBI) leads the team with seven stolen bases.
