TEANECK, N.J. - The Rutgers softball team (19-29) split a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson (9-26) on Thursday evening at the FDU Softball Field. The Scarlet Knights took game one 6-0 before falling to FDU in a close 4-3 affair in the nightcap.
In game one, the Scarlet Knights put two runs on the board in the third inning as Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led off with a single. Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) pushed her across the plate on a fielder's choice and she then scored on a Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) single that dropped just inside the left field line.
RU added another pair of runs in the fourth as Shantai Dixon (Sayreville, N.J.) smacked a double down the line that scored Ashley Hartley (Ripon, Calif.) and a double from Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.) scored Dixon.
Another two runs in the top of the sixth inning gave the Scarlet Knights a 6-0 lead as Shaw and Heller were plated.
Fairleigh Dickinson had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to convert as the Scarlet Knights secured the win. Katye Hamlin (College Station, Texas) and Chrissy Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.) combined for a three-hitter as the pair each struck out three batters and Hamlin picked up the win to improve to 7-7 on the season.
FDU was first to strike in the second game as Justina Augustine and Ali Keltos reached on back-to-back walks. Kristen Coughlan moved them with a sacrifice bunt and Hope Hilman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lindsay Glidden's sacrifice fly pushed Augustine across the plate for a 1-0 lead.
Mickenzie Alden's (Spokane, Wash.) sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning knotted the score, 1-1, as Craig scored. RU took the lead on an RBI single from Brittany Loisel (Gilbert, Ariz.) that pushed Jenn Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) across the plate.
Meghan Doherty started a rally for FDU in the second inning as she sent a long single to right center field and she was followed by Jessica Klein, who was hit by a pitch. A double from Keltos tied the score at 2-2 when Doherty scored. Klein then gave FDU the lead when she took home on a wild pitch.
Augustine's home run in the fourth inning gave the Knights a 4-2 advantage.
In the fifth inning, Alden helped the Scarlet Knights pull to within one run as she scored on an RBI-single by Mallory Miller (Anaheim, Calif.), but it was not enough as FDU held on for the 4-3 win.
Rutgers will return to action for a BIG EAST doubleheader against St. John's on Saturday, April 26, in Queens, N.Y.
