PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Several Rutgers men's lacrosse student-athletes will showcase their talent on Saturday, June 14 at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. The 2008 United States Men's Under-19 team will face the New Jersey All-Stars at 7:00 p.m.
Rutgers rising sophomore Brian Shemesh (Hillsborough, N.J.) is a member of the U-19 squad. The midfielder was tabbed last summer to represent the U.S. in the 2008 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) Under-19 World Championships. The Championships take place July 3-12, 2008, in Coquitlam, British Columbia. The squad is gearing up for the event with a host of exhibitions, the second of which is on Saturday in Bridgewater.
Shemesh, who tallied six goals for the Scarlet Knights in his first collegiate season, scored a goal in an11-9 win for the U.S. squad over the All-Stars from Long Island on June 8.
Justin Pennington, an honorable mention USILA All-America selection as a sophomore, will suit up for the NJ All-Star team on Saturday. The Flemington, N.J. product was a first team All-ECAC selection this past season, recording 32 points on 22 goals and 10 assists. In addition, Pennington topped the team and was 11th in the nation in ground balls per game.
Midfielder Gerhard Buehning and goalkeeper Billy Olin, both rising juniors, are also members of the NJ team. Olin started 13 games for the Scarlet Knights in 2008, registering 144 saves. The Horseheads, N.Y. native ranked 20th nationally in save percentage. Buehning finished fourth on the team in goals (13) and points (21). The Essex Falls, N.J. native, who started 12 of 13 contests, ranked third among team leaders in assists with eight.
"We are extremely proud to have Brian represent both the United States and Rutgers on the Under-19 team. It is a credit to Brian as well as a testament to the quality of player we are drawing," Rutgers head coach Jim Stagnitta said. "To have the opportunity to play against Justin Pennington gives Brian and his U.S. teammates the chance to prepare for world play versus one of the best in the country. Along with Gerhard and Billy, the bright future of Rutgers Lacrosse will be on full display on Saturday night."
The contest is being hosted by the NJ Chapters of U.S. Lacrosse. Tickets are $5 for adults and free for ages 18 and under. More information can be found by clicking here,
