Rutgers Completes 2-0 Weekend With Shutout of Dayton
Sep 14 | Women's Soccer
DAYTON, Ohio - Sophomore Ashley Jones (Feasterville, Pa.) scored her second game-winner in as many games and Rutgers defeated Dayton 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio. Rutgers (5-1) finished the Ohio State Tournament 2-0, while the Flyers (4-3) finished 0-2. Duke also finished 2-0 in the tournament.
"We played very well today," said head coach Glenn Crooks."We are controlling a lot of the intangibles and we didn't break at the end of the game. We are really showing the signs of a team that has an opportunity to earn a postseason berth. There is still a lot of soccer to be played, but we are winning close games and making big plays in key moments."
Rutgers scored in the 20th minute, when junior goalkeeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) picked off a cross. She then kicked the ball past midfield, where it bounced once and cleared the defender. Jones sprinted to the ball, and when Dayton goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers came out of the box, the sophomore chipped it past her for the game's only goal.
"Erin and Ashley were big for us today," said Crooks. "Ashley had two key scoring opportunities this weekend where composure was critical, and she buried both of them. Today we were scrambling a bit at the end of the game, but Erin came up big twice to give us the victory."
Guthrie's assist was the first of her impressive career, and she also set a career-high with 10 saves against the Flyers, including two in the final 15 minutes of the match. Rutgers is 3-0 on the road for the first time since 2006, when it started the season 5-0 away from Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7:00 p.m., when they open their BIG EAST slate at in-state rival Seton Hall.
