Rutgers Falls at No. 19 Georgetown 1-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Rutgers women's soccer team lost its first road game of 2008, falling at No. 19 Georgetown 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Scarlet Knights (7-3, 2-1) saw their four-game road winning streak came to an end while Georgetown (8-0-2, 3-0) remained undefeated.
After a scoreless first half, Georgetown got on the board in the 71st minute when Samantha Baker sent a long throw to Kelly D'Ambrisi inside the box, and the Hoyas freshman sent it in for the score. Rutgers was unable to tally the equalizer and GU held on for the victory.
Rutgers was led by junior Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.), who had five shots, including one on goal. Senior Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) tallied three shots, two on goal, and junior Caycie Gusman (Honolulu, Hawaii) saw her only shot stopped by Hoyas goalkeeper Jackie Desjardin, who recorded four saves. Rutgers junior goalkeeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) stopped three shots in the loss.
RU led its opponent in shots 10-4 and corner kicks 7-3, but the two teams were tied in shots-on-goal with four apiece.
The Scarlet Knights return to Yurcak Field for four consecutive games, starting with Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7:00 p.m.
GAME NOTES:
The loss marks Rutgers' first on the road in 2008. The Scarlet Knights are 4-1 away from Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights saw their four-game road winning streak come to an end, leaving them one win shy of tying their road start of 2006, when they began the season 5-0 away from Yurcak Field.
Rutgers has lost two in a row for the first time all season.
All three of RU's losses have been to ranked opponents, and all three have been by a final score of 1-0. Rutgers lost to No. 10 Penn State in double-overtime at home on Sept. 5 and No. 4 Portland at home on Sept. 26.
